SORN Soran

Traditional Leather Puppet Maker

Soran’s family lives at Don Mon Village close to Bakong temple, 12 kilometres to the east of Siem Reap. His Dad is a fisherman; his Mum smokes the catch and sells to the local market.

Soran put himself through a local craft workshop attached to his school. He loved drawing and puppet making became his creative calling. He uses a wooden mallet and bespoke metal punches to tap out images onto newly tanned cow hides.

He is influenced by the great Hindu epic, the Ramayana, and traditional Cambodian folk tales to create classical figures, mythological characters and flowers and animals.

Earlier this year he completed a creative workshop in Battambang at the Phare Circus campus. It has sparked his interest in starting a small puppet troupe.

Tangram Garden has given the restaurant’s lounge area as his open air studio.

All of his works are for sale. Small ones take only a few days to complete, large ones up to a month. He is currently working in a number of private commissions to add to his portfolio.
