Tangram Welcomes You to Siem Reap

Tangram Garden would like to welcome you to Siem Reap, the gateway to the majestic temples of Angkor Wat. Located in the Northwest of Cambodia, Siem Reap is actually a town build up of several small fishing villages that used to exist along the Siem Reap River and the Tonle Sap Lake. Nowadays the town is a bustling tourism centre with an abundance of variety in terms of hotels, restaurants and activities.

Through all the tourism activities the town has never lost its appeal as a small provincial capital. It is still very much a pleasant and spacious town with the Old Market area being the centre of it all with its colonial style shop houses. When in 1863 Cambodia became a protectorate of France, Siem Reap developed quickly and became together with Battambang the Rice Bowl of Cambodia. The country eventually gained its independence in 1953 and like the rest of Cambodia, Siem Reap faced tremendous challenges afterwards of which the most notable would be the Khmer Rouge period between 1975 and 1979.

Nowadays, Siem Reap is one of Cambodia’s most thriving provincial capitals. However, the province itself remains one of the country’s poorest. Tourism is the town’s main source of income where the remainder of the province is primarily dependent on rural activities and fishing. Siem Reap is also the basis from where to explore the Great Tonle Sap Lake. The floating villages that surround the town are like nowhere else in the world. Together with temples dating back to three different Kingdoms, an abundance of wildlife and other natural attractions, Siem Reap is a perfect place to explore the rich past, pleasant present and promising future of Cambodia, of which Tangram Garden is proud to be part of!
